Hey Hornets - It's time to READ!

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
- Dr. Seuss

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, March is designated as National Reading Month.

Reading is fun and has many benefits, regardless of your age. It’s a key component of education and professional development. It also has immediate and long-lasting health benefits such as increased cognitive function, memory, vocabulary, empathy and decreased levels of stress.

Kearsley is celebrating National Reading Month with One Book, One School. It is a chance for all staff, students, and families to read and talk about the same book.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, by Bill Martin and Eric Carle

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? is a classic children's picture book by Bill Martin Jr., famously illustrated by Eric Carle, that uses repetitive, rhythmic text and vibrant collage art to help toddlers learn colors and animals. The story follows a chain of animals (a brown bear, red bird, yellow duck, etc.) each asking the next what they see, ending with a teacher looking at a group of children. Published in 1967, it's known for its simple, engaging structure and is a staple for early literacy.

8 Class Pets + 1 Squirrel ÷ 1 Dog = Chaos, by Vivian Vande Velde

Running into the school to escape a hungry owl was easy. But with the door locked and an angry dog chasing him, how will Twitch the squirrel get back out? He'll need a hand, of course. . . . and maybe a paw, a fin, and a wing, too. Can the classroom pets—including Sweetie the library rat, a snake named Angel, and the first graders' Green Eggs and Hamster—help Twitch get back to his cozy home in the trees? Each chapter is told in the voice of a different animal as the squirrel works his way through the school, visiting each classroom and trying to stay one step ahead of the principal's menacing dog, Cuddles.

Number of the Stars, by Lois Lowry

The unforgettable Newbery Medal–winning novel from Lois Lowry. As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.

Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.

The high school is excited to celebrate March is Reading Month!

  • We’ll also celebrate building-wide with a Reading Spirit Week during the last week before Spring Break! Students and staff can participate in fun, book-themed days inspired by titles students have read. Details coming soon!

  • In addition, each Friday there will be a reading-themed “Question of the Day” to keep the excitement going all month long.
