Winter Weather

Kearsley Families,

With winter weather just around the corner, I wanted to share how we make decisions regarding potential school closures.  Our schools will remain open whenever conditions on our campuses and surrounding roads are safe and reasonable.  We fully recognize that our families rely on us each day not only for learning, but also for meals, supervision, and other essential services. However, there are times when severe weather or extreme cold may require us to close school.

Here is an overview of how these decisions are made:

  • Consultation with multiple agencies: Our team consults with the Genesee County Road Commission, local transportation and public safety officials, leaders from nearby districts, and our own maintenance and transportation staff to gather the most accurate and up-to-date information.

  • Early morning road checks: District personnel and I begin driving Kearsley roads as early as 3:00 AM when winter weather is expected. We travel main roads, secondary roads, neighborhoods and stay in continuous communication with the Road Commission regarding plowing and salting schedules.

  • Transportation considerations: Safe transportation is a significant part of the decision-making process. Our buses begin leaving the garage as early as 6:15 AM.  Even when main roads are improving, side roads may remain unplowed or unsafe for buses to navigate.

  • Temperature and wind-chill factors: School may also be closed when temperatures or wind chills reach dangerously low levels. We consult with the Genesee County Health Department to help guide these decisions.

  • Timeframes and communication: Our goal is to always reach a decision and communicate it out by 6:00 AM via both phone and text.  When possible, we do try to notify families the night before.  Please make sure you have completed online renewal for your child to ensure we have your accurate contact information.

  • Extra-curricular activities: If road conditions improve throughout the day, it is possible that after-school or evening activities may continue as scheduled. These decisions are typically made in the late morning and communicated promptly.

Please know that the safety of our students, staff and families will always be at the forefront of every decision we make. Thank you for your partnership and patience as we navigate the winter months together.

Sincerely,

Paul Gaudard, Superintendent
