We are committed to the safety and well-being of everyone in our Kearsley Community. Our schools will remain open whenever weather conditions on our campuses and the immediate vicinity are reasonable. We know that we are counted on daily to not only educate but also to feed and provide valuable other services to our students. Occasionally, adverse weather or other conditions may delay school operations or close the district. The following explains how our administration makes the decision to close the district due to weather:
Our team consults with many sources, including Genesee County Road Commission, local transportation and public safety officials, leaders from other nearby schools, and our district’s maintenance and transportation team members to determine whether to delay or close school.
District personnel travel our roads as early as 3:00 a.m. on mornings when weather could potentially cause a district-wide closing. We travel main roads, as well as our secondary roads and through neighborhoods. We remain in contact with the Genesee County Road Commission to stay up-to-date on plowing schedules.
Safe transportation of students is a large consideration in the decision making process. Buses leave our transportation department as early as 6:00 a.m. in the morning. There are times when main roads are safe but side roads have not been plowed and can make it difficult for buses to pass safely.
Our schools may also close when temperatures and wind chills reach an extremely cold level. There is no state law that mandates school districts to close at a certain temperature reading, however, we consult with the Genesee County Health Department to help determine our course of action.
If road conditions have improved, it is possible that extra-curricular activities may be allowed to take place. That decision on inclement weather days will typically be made in the late morning and communicated accordingly.
Many times these are tough calls but we will continue to put the safety of our students, families and staff at the forefront of all decision making.
